چکیده

SIR, – Over recent weeks, the Garden Bird Health Initiative (GBHi) has received an unusual increase in the number of calls from members of the public reporting finch morbidity and mortality in their gardens. The greenfinch (Carduelis chloris) and chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs) are the species most frequently involved, sometimes in large numbers, and the national surveillance scheme has collated reports from a wide geographical area. Postmortem investigation has identified necrotic oesophagitis and ingluvitis associated with trichomonad-like parasites. This appears to be a novel and growing epidemic, following on from an apparent initial emergence in 2005 (Cousquer 2005, Holmes and Duff 2005, Pennycott and others 2005) and, if we are to determine the underlying factors leading to its emergence and impact on garden bird species, further research is required. We would be grateful if colleagues could inform us of garden bird mortality incidents by calling the GBHi on 020 7449 6685. A factsheet about this condition and information on best feeding practice for garden birds is available on the UFAW website (www.ufaw.org.uk).

Molecular characterization of Trichomonas gallinae isolates recovered from the Canadian Maritime provinces' wild avifauna reveals the presence of the genotype responsible for the European finch trichomonosis epidemic and additional strains.

Finch trichomonosis, caused by Trichomonas gallinae, emerged in the Canadian Maritime provinces in 2007 and has since caused ongoing mortality in regional purple finch (Carpodacus purpureus) and American goldfinch (Carduelis tristis) populations. Trichomonas gallinae was isolated from (1) finches and rock pigeons (Columbia livia) submitted for post-mortem or live-captured at bird feeding sites ...

The finch epidemic strain of Trichomonas gallinae is predominant in British non-passerines.

Avian trichomonosis, caused by the flagellated protozoan Trichomonas gallinae, is a recently emerged infectious disease of British passerines. The aetiological agent, a clonal epidemic strain of the parasite, has caused unprecedented finch mortality and population-level declines in Britain and has since spread to continental Europe. To better understand the potential origin of this epidemic and...

The emergence and spread of finch trichomonosis in the British Isles.

Finch trichomonosis, caused by the protozoal parasite Trichomonas gallinae, was first recognized as an emerging infectious disease of British passerines in 2005. The first year of seasonal epidemic mortality occurred in 2006 with significant declines of greenfinch Carduelis chloris and chaffinch Fringilla coelebs populations. Here, we demonstrate that large-scale mortality, principally of green...

Epidemic mycoplasmal conjunctivitis in house finches from eastern North America.

In the winter of 1993-94, house finches (Carpodacus mexicanus) with severe conjunctivitis (later shown to be caused by Mycoplasma gallisepticum) were first observed in sub-urban Washington D.C. (USA) and adjacent states. Using a large network of volunteer observers in eastern North America, we were able to track the monthly prevalence of the disease between November 1994 and March 1997. Using t...

First Report of Coccidiosis and Gizzard Erosion in a Zebra Finch (Taeniopygia guttata) of Iran

Coccidiosis and gizzard erosion are rare conditions in cage bird. A male zebra finch was presented with a history of watery diarrhea, anorexia, ruffled feathers, weight loss, and lethargy and died finally. Gross necropsy revealed small areas of erosions and hemorrhages on the gizzard wall. The intestine was oedematous. The spleen appeared pale and small. The testes were asymmetric.Histologicall...
